Parris Powers Memorial Arboretum

The Parris Powers Memorial Arboretum at ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉútv State Community College is a Certified Level II Arboretum dedicated to promoting environmental awareness, scientific learning, and community engagement through the appreciation of trees. Spread throughout the Gallatin campus, the arboretum features over 60 labeled tree species, with new plantings and discoveries continuing to expand its diversity. Visitors can explore the collection at their own pace using either a printable tree map or an interactive digital map—both available on the arboretum’s webpage.

The arboretum began as a student-led initiative by Cynthia Hernandez, supported by faculty member Dr. Ellen Dayhuff and inspired by chemistry professor Parris Powers, whose passion for science and education helped shape the project. Though Professor Powers passed away before its completion, the arboretum was named in his honor and officially opened on Arbor Day 2018. Since then, faculty, staff, and volunteers have continued to care for and expand this living tribute to his legacy.

Open to the public year-round, the arboretum serves as both a peaceful natural space and an educational resource. Whether you're a student, educator, or community member, the arboretum offers an opportunity to connect with nature, learn about urban forestry, and experience the ecological richness of the Vol State campus.
